Kawasaki’s Fun Little Dirt Bike Gets Serious

The original KLX™110 was one of the most fun-to-ride, kid-friendly bikes of all time, with a torquey four-stroke single / automatic-clutch drivetrain that encouraged everybody to hop on and have a ride. And that’s exactly what happened - everybody did hop on: Research reveals that KLXs get ridden more by adults than by kids. For 2010, a thoroughly re-engineered KLX110 gains more versatility than ever, with more power, more performance and more convenience. So, while they were busy doing all that anyway, Kawasaki’s engineers decided to build an entirely new KLX110 with bigger kids in mind, even fully grown ones: the 2010 KLX110L.

The KLX110 “L” model’s seat, at 28.7 inches high, is nearly 2 inches farther from the dirt than a standard KLX. That’s the result of equipping it with a 2.4-inch longer fork with 5.5 inches of wheel travel, plus a longer shock that serves up 5.2 inches of wheel travel out back. Naturally, those long-travel components carry revised spring and damper settings as well, so bigger kids can push harder wherever they ride.

Aggressive riders often demand the superior control of a manual clutch, so the new KLX110L model gets one to compliment its four-speed gearbox. This combination lets more experienced riders wring every drop of performance from the 111cc engine. Convenient push-button electric starting helps make starting the KLX110L quick and easy for any rider.

The Kawasaki design team outfitted the new KLX110L with a gas tank, seat, side panels, shrouds and fenders that mimic the KX450F’s. A taller, reshaped seat is part of the deal, too, along with a handlebar bend optimized to provide excellent comfort and control to a large variety of riders. In other words, this one’s for big kids of all ages.

Factory-style components and tuning for every racer

Kawasaki's KX'250F motocrosser had a victorious year, winning on the track and topping its class in numerous enthusiast magazine shootouts. The successful mix of the highly rigid aluminum frame and top-shelf suspension components deliver superb high-speed stability, while its chassis geometry and high-revving engine offer excellent rear wheel traction and holeshot-winning performance. Christophe Pourcel used his new Monster Energy/ Pro Circuit / Kawasaki KX250F to win the AMA East Supercross Lites Championship and then continued his winning ways into the outdoor season. But in the volatile world of racing, it's a constant challenge to stay on top.

To ensure it continues its podium-topping tradition, Kawasaki fine-tuned the light handling KX250F for 2010. The engineers capitalized on its solid foundation, with refinements focused on increasing performance and longevity. The result of their labors will help the Kawasaki KX250F add to its ever-growing trophy collection.

Borrowing from the racing world, the Kawasaki motor KX250F gets a new piston with a bridged-box bottom making its first appearance in a mass-production machine. The new piston is lighter and stronger. It also has a revised profile with a shorter skirt and shorter piston pin, which reduces reciprocating weight. It also features a revised crown that improves combustion. The cylinder height was raised accordingly to maintain the 13.2:1 compression ratio. Low-rpm performance was bumped up via a new longer head pipe and shorter mid-section on the new, more durable stainless steel exhaust pipe.

The 249cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine received a number of other refinements for 2010, such as electrofusion treatment on the cylinder bore, revised oil pump rotors and a wider big-end bearing to increase engine life.

Its crank web design produces a crankshaft balance factor of close to 60 percent, on par with Kawasaki's factory racers. The result is reduced engine vibration, smoother power delivery and increased performance in the mid-high rpm range. Tuned to deliver the widest possible torque band, the Kawasaki-KX250F engine offers traction in a controllable, class-leading manner from the first crack of the throttle to wide-open at the rev limiter.

Like its bigger sibling, the KX250F received larger, stronger radiators with increased fin and tube pitch that accumulate less mud and provide more consistent cooling. With the extra strength in the new radiators, the reinforcing brackets could be dropped, helping reduce the weight of the entire radiator assembly.

Transmission durability was also raised inside and out. Building upon the achievements of last year, Kawasaki engineers put larger dogs on the third and fourth input gears to help prevent wear, and revised the fourth input gear holding method by eliminating a circlip and washer and changing the shape of the second input gear to reduce thrust clearance. On the outside, the new KX250F crankcases are stronger and thicker with increased material around the engine mount holes. The transmission action and feedback are optimized with its ratchet drive shift mechanism and integrated clutch cable holder into the crankcase.

With its lightweight construction blend of forged, extruded and cast parts, the KX250F's slim aluminum perimeter frame has the chassis balance and settings race-experienced riders seek. The center of gravity and locations of key items such as the swingarm pivot, output sprocket and rear axle were positioned to best channel the drive from the rear tire into forward acceleration.

For 2010, chassis improvements are primarily focused on delivering sharper cornering performance and an optimized front-to-rear balance for improved suspension composure. To achieve this balance, the race-oriented suspension settings were revised for a more balanced less forward-leaning chassis posture when riding. A new steering stem with lower rigidity helps lighten handling, while also providing smoother fork action and better impact absorption.

These revisions refine the stable damping performance of the KX250F's Showa twin-chamber fork during long motos and work in conjunction with the updated swingarm, which features a modified cross-section with thinner wall thickness and narrower internal ribs. The Showa rear shock's new damping settings provide greater stability and less "kicking" on corner entry. New Uni-Trak rear suspension linkage ratios match these new rear shock damping characteristics.

Designed with rider ergonomics in mind, the KX250F bodywork offers riders a slim interface and a natural positioning that make it easier to go fast. The sleek bodywork components include one-piece, dual injected, two-tone black and green plastic shrouds and side number plates. The shrouds were fine-tuned to fit the new radiators while retaining their slender form. For 2010, a thicker and more rigid front fender graces the KX250F. The slim, rider friendly seat with a non-slip top surface and smooth sides provides excellent seated grip and rider mobility, and gets firmer urethane foam to hold its shape longer.

Chassis protection is grade-A for 2010, and helps sustain the KX's durability factor. Examples include the large, resin skid plate, the rear caliper guard and the narrow, long-lasting chain guide, all of which offer protection without high weight.

The rest of the KX250F is equally impressive, with premium-quality Renthal aluminum handlebars included as standard equipment along with black triple clamps, engine covers and hubs. The new black alumite coated lightweight aluminum wheels feature a revised cross section that offers both increased strength and lighter weight, and the ribless rear hub and butted spokes further reduce unsprung weight. Factory-style graphics finish off the package and complement the KX250F's stellar on-track performance.

Additional performance-oriented engine characteristics

The engine was tuned such that the torque curve follows the limit of running resistance for as long as possible.(Unchecked, engine torque can exceed this limit, resulting in wheel spin, which does nothing to help forward momentum.)

Efforts were made to achieve the widest possible torque band, so that traction efficiency would be maximized for a greater part of the rev range.

Lightweight titanium valves (IN: 31mm; EX: 25 mm) reduce reciprocating weight and offer high-rpm reliability. The ultra-light valves have extremely thin valve stems on par with those found in supersport machines. The intake valves feature thicker heads for increased strength and both intake and exhaust valves are formed from a new, highly rigid, titanium material.

Crank web design increases offsetting moment for a high crankshaft balance factor. At close to 60%, the balance factor of the '10 KX250F is on par with our factory racers. The result is reduced engine vibration, smoother power delivery and increased performance in the mid-high rpm range.

Sprocket-style chain drive roller helps smooth engine braking by reducing the effect of driveline lash when the rider gets off the gas quickly and play in the lower side of the chain suddenly tightens. The additional control facilitates corner entry.

Fuel-injected perfection for demanding riders

The 2010 Kawasaki KX™450F provides an ideal platform for riders looking to win races. Its precise aluminum frame, premium suspension components and expert-tuned settings are designed to deliver superb high-speed stability, enabling racers to capitalize on its amazing engine performance. Holeshot acceleration is delivered by a strong powerband and optimized chassis geometry specifically engineered to maximize rear wheel traction. Monster Energy™ Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto used his new KX450F to win several AMA Supercross and Motocross races, during his first year on a 450.

The Kawasaki KX450F features a number of engine refinements, including the first mass-production use of a high-performance bridged-box bottom piston that offers more power in the high and over-rev rpm ranges. Revised cam timing and ECU settings provide better mid-high rpm performance, while reinforcements to the cylinder sleeve and right side crankcase increase durability.

The race-ready engine is compact and light, with a short 100mm cylinder head and a 12.5:1 compression ratio. A wedge-shaped crank web offsets 60% of the crankshaft’s reciprocating weight, producing an effective “counterweight” effect. This is on par with Kawasaki’s factory racers and helps reduce engine vibration, smooth power delivery and enhance low-rpm throttle response. A new 40mm shorter stainless steel exhaust pipe connects to a large-volume silencer which uses long-fiber packing material to maximize service intervals. A new rubber damping collar in the rear silencer mount provides a boost to long-term durability.

The Kawasaki-KX450F’s Digital Fuel Injection (DFI) automatically adjusts to suit track and climate conditions, and offers stable fuel-metering, even when landing from jumps in tough motocross conditions. The DFI system includes a compact and lightweight ECU, a 43 mm throttle body, a lightweight aluminum in-tank fuel pump and an ultra-fine atomizing injector. Set at a 45° angle for ideal mid-range power, the 12-hole injector sprays precise, 60-micron fuel particles for smooth power delivery and accurate engine response throughout the rpm range.

Designed specifically for motocross, the KX450F’s lightweight DFI system doesn’t require a battery; the engine can be started within three rotations of the crankshaft, using only the electricity generated through the initial stroke of the kickstarter. A new ECU program with revised settings offers improved engine response at low-mid rpm.

An optional ECU Setting Tool allows racers to select from several different ECU data maps, or fine-tune a custom map that alters fuel injection and ignition timing to suit different tracks and conditions. The tool can also be used as a data logger, recording up to six hours of data, including engine rpm, degree of throttle opening, engine boost, coolant temp, air temp, ignition timing, fuel adjustments, gear position and system voltage.

The engine’s phenomenal power is delivered through a new clutch that features a lighter operating plate with improved oil drainage and new friction plates with 75% more friction material than last year’s unit. The entire assembly is designed to provide improved clutch feel and enhanced durability. A new final drive chain features thinner inner links and a 20 gram weight savings to help boost acceleration.

Chassis updates focus on making the KX450F even easier to ride fast. A new steering stem shaft and revised suspension tuning provide lighter handling, improved suspension action, increased comfort and greater cushioning when landing from jumps.

The 2010 Motor KX450F’s D-shaped aluminum swingarm features a revised cross section with narrower ribs and thinner walls. It pivots high in the aluminum frame to maximize rear wheel traction. Mounting the arm of the Uni-Trak® rear suspension linkage below the swingarm provides a long rear suspension stroke and facilitates precise shock tuning.

Complementing the responsive chassis with settings optimized for experienced racers, the KAWASAKI KX450F’s suspension offers a host of features for precise cornering and sharp handling. For 2010, the Kayaba Air-Oil-Separate (AOS) fork receives revised spring rate and damping settings working in conjunction with a less rigid steering stem to offer improved action and increased comfort during the initial phase of the suspension stroke. The fork features a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating on the outer surface of the inner fork tubes to minimize stiction when the fork is exposed to lateral forces that would otherwise hamper slide action. The result is smooth and precise fork response, especially during cornering. The overall suspension action is extremely smooth due to a friction-reducing Kashima Coat treatment on the inside surfaces of the outer fork tubes and the rear shock reservoir. Black wrap-around guards provide excellent protection for the fork sliders.

The 2010 KAWASAKIKX450F’s Kayaba rear shock received new spring rate and damping settings which contribute to increased stability and improved impact performance when landing jumps. It features a large 50mm piston and a Kashima Coat treatment on the shock internals to help maintain a plush feel throughout the toughest motos. Easily accessible dual compression adjusters allow high- and low-speed damping to be tuned separately, giving mechanics and riders the ability to easily fine-tune the suspension for difficult track conditions.

New 10mm-thicker and 7.6mm-wider radiators feature increased fin and tube pitch for increased strength and better resistance to mud build-up. The extra strength of the new radiators allowed the reinforcing brackets to be eliminated, resulting in lower overall weight. New one-piece, dual injected, two-tone green and black plastic shrouds accommodate larger new radiators while still providing slim ergonomics.

A slim seat design with firm urethane foam, a non-slip top surface and smooth sides provides good seated grip and excellent rider mobility. The frame echoes the slim profile at the top, but widens at the lower end by the ankles to provide the rider with better feel and control. Completing the rider interface are wide 50mm footpegs that offer tenacious grip and a comfortable platform.

The 2010 KX450F is available in Kawasaki lime green, with black alumite-coated rims and aggressive graphics for a factory appearance.

Kawasaki motocross increasingly emphasize its quality,Rick Johnson and Mercedes Gonzales, both legends of the sport in their own right, teamed up in creating a riding school out of Irvine, California called the Motocross School of Champions. While their schools are usually men by a vast majority, both Rick and Mercedes agreed that they thought there was a special need for women. Kawasaki also felt the need to give more attention and support to female riders, so the Kawasaki Women's Motocross School of Champions was born.

Heather Lewis (Jimmy's wife) and I both received invitations to the event which took place at Lake Elsinore Motocross Park. Also on the guest list were some of the most recognizable females in the industry: Miki Keller of the WMA, Pro motocrossers Elizabeth Bash and Kadie Garrett, Former Host of Dirt Rider Adventures Molly Culver, and veteran woman motocross racer Gale Webb (a.k.a. America's Sports Mom).

At the end of the day, we had all picked up a lot. Plus, we all had a great time. Rick and Mercedes really hit it on the head when it comes to teaching girls. We learn differently; we respond to encouragement. After riding with almost entirely guys for years, even I had forgotten how important that can be. I've learned to take not getting run off the track as a sign of encouragement, and a lack of criticism as a compliment. All the "great job!" comments and high fives really made for a fun, relaxing environment (a pleasant change of pace)! Many guys don't understand a girl's constant need for comfort and encouragement, but just know that we're hard-wired that way.

"Being a woman, I understand the fears and the hesitation that women have where men don't," said Mercedes Gonzales, "Because men have the tendency to give you the tools, tell you what to do, and they're like, 'Just do it!' With women, you have to build up their confidence, and assure them that nothing's going to go wrong."

Motocross/Grand Prix (GP) Event Draws a crowd at Cyrus Canyon

Kernville, CA., May 8, 2008...Over four hundred spectators were on hand to enjoy the Motocross/Grand Prix events held, Saturday and Sunday, April 26 & 27 at Cyrus Canyon Off-Highway Vehicle track off Sierra Way in Kernville.

Real Sports, a Motocross and Grand Prix event marketing and managing company, hosted the event under a Special Use Permit from the Sequoia National Forest. Real Sports based in San Diego, California produces approximately 15 events nationwide per year. Jeff Cooper, Real Sports owner stated, "I believe that Cyrus Canyon has the potential to be as large as the Mammoth Motocross event which currently attracts 3,000 riders nationwide."

The event drew in approximately 160 participants going for a First Place prize of $2,500.00. Among the participants were 4 pro riders - one being the number 1 rider in the State. The riders and spectators represented a huge diversity in age and in ethnic background - a real plus for events in the valley. Local California Highway Patrol and the Kern County Sheriff Department were on hand to assist at the event.

Real Sports assistant coordinator, Jeff Bartlett worked with local Forest Service representative Bob Frenes, Assistant Recreation Officer. Their coordinated pre-work layed the foundation for Jeff Cooper’s construction crew to start work on the track a week prior to the event.

Cheryl Borthick, President, Kernville Chamber of Commerce stated, "This event was a testament to the partnering that can happen in a community like the Kern River Valley."

Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship Series

Mechanicsville, MD – The 10th round of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship Series held at Budds Creek Motocross Park was up and down as was the weather for the KTM Factory Team riders.

Jagermeister/MDK/KTM rider Justin Brayton, who came to Budds Creek looking for his first podium, fell shy of that accomplishment after a bad start and mid-moto crash put him in 21st overall after the first moto. "I was one of the unfortunate riders who got caught up on the start after Reardon crashed. I fought my way up to around 20th from a poor start and then crashed setting myself back all the positions I had gained. In the end I was only able to climb back up to 21st," commented Brayton.

The second moto proved to be much stronger for Brayton. "I got a 6th place start and just focused on maintaining that position." Brayton was closing in on Andrew Short when Matt Goerke pulled out in front of him from pit row one lap down. Goerke got between to the two riders and Brayton lost some time and eventually lost a position to Michael Byrne. Near the end of the moto, Short had some problems and Brayton was able to move ahead. Brayton finished in 7th position. His 21-7 positions awarded him 11th overall for the day. "It’s not where I wanted to finish, but it could have been a lot worse," remarked Brayton.

In the 250 Motocross class, Muscle Milk/MDK/KTM rider Ryan Sipes proved he is ready to return to racing. In only his second race back this season, Sipes was able to put together two decent scores. His 11th place finish in the first moto coupled with an impressive 9th place finish in the mud fest of a second moto put him in 8th overall for the day. "I would obviously like to be finishing in the top five, but after sitting the entire season out with an injury, I am very happy to be back and to place within the top ten," reported Sipes.

Sipes teammates were not as fortunate at Budds Creek, as both Wil Hahn and Tommy Searle encountered problems. In the first moto Searle had a great 3rd place start and managed to hang onto 7th position. However, his second moto was a completely new story. Searle started 27th on the first lap, charged hard to work his way up to 19th on the second lap and then got stuck in a deep mud rut on the third lap to end up back in 29th. With only 9 laps, (the second moto was cut short due to large amounts of rain fall) Searle was only able to climb to 21st. His moto scores earned him 13th overall for the day. Hahn also suffered from a bad start due to horrible gate pick in the second moto. Still recovering from shoulder surgery, the rough and muddy track was very demanding on Hahn as he still has some pain from his shoulder injury. His 21-18 moto scores were notable coming from the back of the pack but were not strong enough to put him inside the top twenty overall.

Professional motocross embodies the perfect mix of work and pleasure. It is about dirt, power and excitement just as much as Hyundai construction equipment. The 2009 MX1 world championship motocross season will be kicked off at the end of this month and Hyundai will be a main sponsor of this exiting season, for the third year in a row.

The 2009 season will be kicked off in Faenza, Italy on the 29th of March. It was at Faenza where David Phillipaerts won his first MX1 world title last September. Eyes will be on him this season to see whether he can confirm with a second title.

But the 2007 world champion Steve Ramon is out for revenge as he saw his second MX1 title slip through his fingers during that last GP in Faenza in 2008. Ending third last season, Ken Dedycker will be another man to watch out for as his performances keep improving year by year. And what about Jonathan Barragan who definitely broke through last year with some very convincing GP wins and a fourth place overall. Jonathan Coppins, whose plans to become world champion in 2007 were only messed up his severe injury, will for sure be ready to take the lead again in 2009.

In other words, it is bound to be another super exciting season this year. With overseas GP’s in the USA and Brazil added to new GP’s in Turkey and Latvia there are some real exciting venues on this year calendar too. Hyundai and its dealer network is looking forward to giving the MX1 world championship all the support it can to help find that important balance between work and pleasure.

No clear warning is given of the dangers of using a rearward facing child seat in that seat without first disabling the airbag.
